Clarification

It was pointed out to me (by a very smart person!) that my post on home design and style came across pretty harshly toward a lot of popular design schemes. Re-reading it, I can see that!

I want to make it very clear that that post was exploring my own preferences, my personal quirks, my likes and dislikes, in my own space.  I was making no statement or judgment of anyone else's preferences.  I know many people really love the lived-in, vintage feel of shabby chic; many are calmed by the clean openness of minimalism; and so forth.  That is just fine. In fact, it's great!  When it comes to design and style, do what you like, within your priorities and means.  Don't let me rain on your parade. I'm really sorry if I did that for anyone!

I can't stick a specific label on what my design style is, like I can with the vintage clothing years I prefer. (If you're curious, 1937-1942. :p)  My post grew out of a stream-of-consciousness exploration, defining what I like by starting with what I dislike, and trying to identify reasons why.  Frankly, the post was all about ME, and it never occurred to me that I was attacking things that readers might like very much!

Contrast is awesome, and uniformity is boring, even if it's uniformity to my preferences.  So go forth and style what you like.  Explore your own style, the one that you can't stick a label on.  Discover the elements that stay with you through the trends.  And then write about it, with lots of pictures! I want to see. :)

  1. I enjoyed your last post and didn't take it in a bad way at all! But now I'm curious - are the pictures in your post examples of interiors that you like, or things that other people like that you can't stand? LOL!

    1. Haha, I wondered if I should explain! My attempt was to show a wide variety of styles. They're all from my various Pinterest boards, but some are just for specific elements and not because I like the whole look.

The first one I think I pinned because it shows curtains mounted right under the ceiling. The look overall is too busy for me, and I prefer wood to metal furniture, although it's still a very pleasant place. I love open windows. :)

The second is my least favorite, because of the lack of color (and I don't like beige or brown anyway), and the furniture is fairly modern. But it's a lovely room, and shows a variation of seating for a room with windows besides sofas.

The third focuses more on the space than on the furniture, to me! It's attractive but very dependent on sunlight to be cheerful. It's also very unlike anything I have in my house.

The fourth picture I probably like the most, and again from my "sunrooms" board. I think the biggest thing I noticed was the pink rug, though!

    2. LOL! That's awesome. Thanks for the further commentary. I love hearing what people like and don't like in home decor. It's fascinating to me. One of my favorite things to do with my mom is to look through decorating magazines together and we'll talk about which pictures we think are pretty and which ones are ugly. ;)
